The history of DOONREAGAN goes all the way back to pre-historic times. The land, stretching from the sea shore to the top of Cashel Hill 1000 feet above sea level, hasn’t changed much in the past two thousand years: it has ruins of houses pre-dating any known records.
The main Doon House was built in the eighteenth century by a Thomas Hazell, who had come from Scotland to supervise the precious seaweed trade along this coast, worth no less than £10,000 in the year 1800. Hazell is also responsible for building adjacent Cashel House, now a hotel of international renown. In the early 20th century, Cashel was chosen by Marconi as the site for some of his early experiments with Morse signals.
During the Troubles in the 1920s, DOONREAGAN lived through a vicious attack by the Black and Tans regiment; the then owner saved himself, escaping across Cashel Hill. Having had a number of different owners, the property was bought in the late 1960s by Robert Jocelyn, tenth Earl of Roden, who made it his family home.
DOONREAGAN is situated in the small village of Cashel, eight miles from Roundstone (approx 20 mins via car), one of the most popular seaside villages in the West of Ireland, twelve miles from the picturesque town of Clifden (approx 30 mins via car), and forty-five miles from Galway City (approx one hour via car). With a newly opened motorway from Dublin to Galway, DOONREAGAN can now be reached from Dublin in little over three hours, traffic permitting.
The location allows for day trips to places like the Arann and Inishboffin Islands, The Burren, the Cliffs of Moher and Westport. For overseas travellers, there are ferry services to Ireland from France, England and Scotland. Airports are at Dublin, Galway, Knock and Shannon, served by Aer Lingus, Ryanair and Aer Arann. The nearest train station is in Galway. A national bus service extends to Clifden, with a limited local link to Cashel. A local taxi service can be arranged through your landlord.
